Cougars and Royals Claim Track Titles

Santa Barbara WebSmith Staff
April 24, 2001

Last Thursday, the San Marcos Royals and Ventura Cougars met to determine the Channel League Championships.

The Ventura Boy's team was undefeated going into the competition and a win would assure them sole possession of the League Title. A loss would mean sharing the title with San Marcos. Though it was close, Ventura prevailed by taking first place in 10 of the 15 events.

Sean Foster placed first in three events for the Cougars, winning both the 300 and 110 meter hurdles as well as the discus. Teammate Armond Richards took first in the 200 and 400 races. Brian Kostock of San Marcos took first in both the 3200 and 1600 races while Brad Franzen claimed the top spot in the Long Jump and Triple jump while placing second in the 300 hurdles. With the win the Cougars claimed their fourth Channel League title in a row.

Meanwhile, the girl's were facing the exact same situation but in reverse. The Royals came into the competition undefeated and could claim the league title with a win. The Cougars, however, could force a three way split of the title between the days two opponents and the 3-1 Buena Bulldogs if they could pull off the upset. In the end, San Marcos remained undefeated and won the Championship outright, taking the meet 70-57.

San Marcos Senior Emily Lutz won the 100 and 200 meter races as well as the 300 meter hurdles. Kim Beeson of took first in the 400, 800 and 1600 races for the Royals. The Cougars' Tanisha Pearson won both the Long Jump and Triple Jump. And Jessica Wilbur took both the Shot Put and Discus for Ventura.
