| Santa Barbara WebSmith Staff April 24, 2001 The Channel League Volleyball race has tighten-up. San Marcos (4-1, 9-4) sits on the top of the standings by virtue of the wins last week against Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara. The Royals also defeated Huntington Beach in three games on Saturday. Erik Anderson, Seamus McKiernan and Chase Koop are leading the offensive effort for San Marcos having recorded 53, 37 and 36 kills respectively in last weeks three matches. Dos Pueblos (3-1, 7-3) is 1/2 game back or the Royals. The Chargers, who run a two setter offense (also known as a 6-2 offense), are led by Senior setter Josh Smith (107 kills) and Junior setter Scott Johnson (93 kills). Dos Pueblos will face Santa Barbara and Ventura this week in Channel League action. Third place in league is currently held by Ventura (3-2, 6-5) who defeated San Marcos, but fell to Santa Barbara and Dos Pueblos. The Cougars feature Jared Godinez who has recorded 241 kills this year. Ventura also has a crucial set of games this week taking on San Marcos and Dos Pueblos. Santa Barbara (2-3, 3-7) is a rapidly improving team having won two of their last three games. Jeff Given has been leading the Dons attack as this young teams continues to mature quickly. Buena (0-5, 2-8) has struggled this year in the Channel League but continues to improve having posted a recent win over Oxnard, sweeping them in three games. This weekend the Dons host the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions. Buena, Dos Pueblos, San Marcos and Santa Barbara will all participate in the 16 team tournament which features some of the best teams in California. Play begins at 9:00 am on both Friday and Saturday and continues throughout the day. The Championship game is scheduled for 7:30 pm Saturday. |
