St. Bonaventure Football May Be Added to the Channel League
---
Santa Barbara WebSmith Staff February 21, 2001 At the CIF Southern Section Northern Area Realignment meeting held yesterday at Bishop Diego High School, officials approved a proposal which adds St. Bonaventure to the Channel League for Football only. The change would take affect beginning in the fall of 2002. St. Bonaventure opposed the proposal but was out voted by the other schools. Should the Seraphs chose to appeal the decision, they must do so by March 1st. The CIF Southern Section Realignment Committee would review the matter on May 9th and could forward the appeal to the Executive Committee which meets on May 23rd. The Seraphs will add a new dimension to Channel League Football as they have won the Tri-Valley League Football Championship for the last five years and have a league winning streak of 17 games. As good as St. Bonaventure has been, the school of 900 can expect to find stiffer competition from the Channel Leagues schools of 2,000 plus enrollment. The addition of St. Bonaventure, which already shares Valley Stadium as their home field with Buena and Ventura, will make for a three-way Ventura rivalry. The addition of St. Bonaventure brings to six the number of teams in the Channel League and the even number makes football scheduling easier. However, other sports will continue to have five teams in the league. St. Bonaventure does not field teams in all 22 sports of the Channel League and will remain in the Tri-Valley league for the sports in which it does compete. The problem of an odd number of Channel League schools is going to be compounded by the fact that both the Pacific League and the Marmonte League, which also have been operating with an odd number of schools, will have an even number beginning in 2002. As a result, it will be more difficult to schedule non-league games when a Channel League team has a bye.
