| Santa Barbara WebSmith Staff February 18, 2001 Boy's Basketball: The Channel League entered four teams in the boy's basketball playoffs. League champion Dos Pueblos opened Division II-A Round 1 on Tuesday with a home victory over Newbury Park. The Chargers were led by Omar Cowans with 15 points while Steve Graybill and Kenny Sherman added 14 each. Round two brought a very up tempo game against Charter Oak in the battle of the Chargers. Graybill led DP to a 67-57 victory with 25 points. Dos Pueblos will travel to Redondo on Tuesday for a quarter final game. The Santa Barbara Dons cruised to a 66-34 first round victory over the Lions of El Monte in Division II-AA play on Friday. The Dons were led by Trey Putnam who scored 13 points. Dante Rose, Tucker Waterman and Preston Maloney each added 10 points. Santa Barbara takes on host Cathedral City on Tuesday in the second round. The Bulldogs of Buena found themselves in Lancaster for their Round 1 game in Division I-A Game. Unfortunately the Dogs fell 65-83. Matt Colton was the top scorer with 16 points, while Roosevelt Bolden and Chris Jacobson added 14 each. Ventura proved themselves worthy of their at-large bid to the Division I-A playoffs with a 52-51 wildcard game home victory over Katella. Tyler Ebell scored 16 in the winning effort and Jason Gruber contributed 13. Unfortunately, their victory on Wednesday earned them a date with powerhouse Centennial on Friday. The Cougars bowed out of the playoffs with a 87-59 loss despite Ebell's 18 points. Trevor Robinson and Bryan Easterly added 11 each.
Girl's Basketball: The Cougars of Ventura also enjoyed a first round bye in the Division I-A playoffs before playing host to Huntington Beach in round two. Ventura brought a swift end to Oilers season with a 71-61 victory. The Cougars will also travel on Wednesday, taking on El Dorado in quarter final action. Santa Barbara compete in the Division II-AA playoffs with a first round game at Pasadena. The Dons brought home a 58-49 victory behind the offensive effort of Natalie Garcia who tallied 26 points. Araceli Gil also was a frequent scorer contributing 20 points to the Dons' victory. Santa Barbara will host Sonora on Wednesday in a second round game.
Boy's Soccer: Dos Pueblos defeated Calabasas on Thursday in a Division III wildcard game at DP. Tony Cornish scored both of the Charger goals in the 2-1 victory after having to sit out the opening moments of the game due to a nose bleed. On Saturday, DP traveled to Rosemead for a first round showdown. Unfortunately, the Chargers season came to an end when they lost 6-4 on penalty kicks. The Cougars on Ventura hosted Simi Valley on Wednesday in a Division II wildcard game. Brian Anderson recorded a hat trick in the Cougars 4-1 victory. In round one action on Saturday, the Cougars fell to host Quartz Hill 2-1.
Girl's Soccer: The Lady Chargers opened Division III play with a 4-0 wildcard win against Pasadena. Four different Chargers were responsible for the scoring in the DP victory. However, Dos Pueblos lost 1-0 to Redondo in a first round game on Friday. The San Marcos Royals also represented the Channel League in Division III play. However, they fell 1-0 in a wildcard game at Agoura.
Girl's Water Polo: Ventura also recorded a first round victory with a 17-3 trouncing of Rio Mesa. Amy Simpson led the Cougars with five goals while Elizabeth Derse scored four times and Jessica Nicholas found the net on three occasions. The Cougars will host Santa Ynez on Tuesday. Buena took on Cabrillo on Saturday in their first round game but was unable to stop the Conquistadors, falling 3-14.
