| Santa Barbara WebSmith Staff January 7, 2001 The Buena Bulldogs squared off with their cross-town rivals, the Ventura Cougars in five games last week. The events began on Thursday in Parrish Pool with a girl's water polo match. The Cougars struck first with three goals in the first quarter, including on their first possession. But the Bulldogs cam back scoring five times in the second period to take a 6-4 half-time lead. In the third quarter, the Cougars held Buena scoreless while putting the ball in the net twice to even the game at six. That set up a great fourth quarter finish in which Ventura edged Buena by one goal to win the game 9-8. Ali Golden led the way for the Cougars with three goals while Dolores Johnson and Jessica Nicholas added two goals a piece. Elizabeth Derse and Solange Webster were responsible for the rest of Ventura's points. Danielle Rios set the pace for the Bulldogs with three goals. The Lindsey Kufta-Christie scored two while Amanda Davis, Leah Walters and Samantha Januska scored one each. Buena (0-1, 5-4) travels to Royal on Tuesday for a non-league game while the Cougars (1-0, 6-3) host San Marcos on Tuesday before traveling to Dos Pueblos on Thursday. Meanwhile, the school's boy's soccer teams were meeting for battle on the field. While the battle was close, the Cougars (1-0-0, 9-3-2) made it two wins on the day with a 2-1 Victory over the Bulldogs (0-1-0, 5-7-1). Jon Haystead scored the goal for Buena on an assist from David Fuentes. Buena takes on Channel Islands on Tuesday before traveling to San Marcos on Thursday. Ventura will travel to San Marcos on Tuesday and then host Dos Pueblos on Thursday. The third cross-town game of the day took place at Larrabee Stadium as the girl's soccer teams met to test their skills. This time the Bulldogs prevailed 6-0. Natalie Sanderson and Ashley Garmon each contributed two goals while Shaneka Alford and Stephanie Border also added to the Bulldog's effort. Buena (1-0-0, 14-1-1) will host San Marcos on Thursday. The Cougars (0-1-0, 4-6-2) will host San Marcos on Tuesday and then travel to Dos Pueblos on Thursday. The final Cat-Dog fight of the day saw two strong girl's basketball teams clash in the Buena gym. Ventura brought in an 11-2 record to face Buena who is ranked #1 in the nation by SchoolSports.com and #3 by USAToday. In the end, the Dogs proved to strong for the Cats, winning 70-41. Kelly Greathouse led the way with 23 points while Courtney Young added 22 for the Bulldogs. Courtney LaVere contributed another 16 for Buena who extended their record to 14-0 (1-0 in league). Katy O'Brein led the Cougar scoring with 15 and Jenni Dooley added 12. The Cougars have two home games next, taking on San Marcos on Tuesday and Dos Pueblos on Thursday. Buena will host Oxnard in a non-league game on Tuesday and then travel to San Marcos for a Thursday contest. Buena will also host Harvard-Westlake on Saturday. Each school won two contests on Thursday, setting the stage for Friday's Boy's Basketball showdown at Ventura College. The game remained close throughout the first half with Ventura enjoying a six point half-time lead. After the half, however, the Cougars went on an 11-0 run to take a commanding lead. However, Buena was not done and in the fourth quarter battled to within five points and possession of the basketball with a little more than one minute to play. The Cougars, however, were able to hold off the attack with good defense and free-throw shooting to walk away with a 56-47 victory. The Cougar offense was led by Tyler Ebell who scored 18 points in his second game for Ventura. Bryan Easterly added 12 and Trevor Robinson contributed ten more. The Bulldogs scoring was led by Ryan Cobos and Bobby Meyers with 11 each. Roosevelt Bolden and Matt Colton added eight each for Buena. Buena (0-1, 11-6) travels to Oxnard on Wednesday and San Marcos on Friday. Ventura (1-0, 10-7) host San Marcos on Wednesday and Dos Pueblos on Friday.
