Buena Wins Prestigeous Optismist Tournament

Santa Barbara WebSmith Staff
December 30, 2000

SchoolSport.com, an ESPN affiliate, has ranked the Buena Girl's Basketball team first in the nation, and they are living up to the billing.

After winning their own Kiwanis Tournament and the Invitational Division of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions, the Bulldogs headed for cold and snowy Wisconsin to take part in the Prestigious Optimist Charity Tournament. The Bulldogs dominated their first game, winning 65-41 over Madison-West of Wisconsin. Next they faced Osseo. MN in a semi-final game, coming away with a 53-46 win despite trailing at half-time.

In the final Buena faced their toughest competition to date against Janesville Parker. Janesville reached the final by upsetting the 12th ranked team in the nation, St. Pius of Milwaukee. That win extended the Janesville Parker winning streak to 35 games. Though held to 46 points, the Bulldogs managed an eleven point victory to win the championship and move to 13-0 on the season. Despite fighting the flu, Kelly Greathouse lead the offensive attack with 18 points. Lauren Sargent contributed nine points and Courtney LaVere added 8.

Greathouse was named the Tournament MVP with Sargent and Courtney Young also named to the All-Tournament team. Buena will return home to take on cross-town rivals Ventura on Thursday, January 4th at 7:30 pm.
