Cougars Win as Ebell Sets National Records

Tyler Ebell of Ventura High School has rewritten the national high school record books, but what matters to Tyler is that the Ventura Cougars are headed to the CIF Southern Section Division IV championship game.

The Cougars defeated the Lompoc Braves of the Northern League 34-21 in a hard fought and well played game by both teams. "There's a lot of sore people on both teams because that was a great football game" said Coach Phil McCune at the end of the contest. "They're really a good, good team."

Ebell carried the ball for 317 yards on 38 carries and scored all 5 of the Cougars' touchdowns. In the third quarter, he broke the national single season rushing record of 4,088 yards on a first down run of nine yards. The new record now stands at 4,218 yards with one game remaining to play.

If that weren't enough, Ebell has now scored 61 touchdowns on the season, surpassing DeShaun Foster's previous national record of 59 set in 1997. Ebell has signed to play with UCLA next year.

Despite national media attention, Ebell is keeping his goal in focus. "It doesn't mean anything until we win CIF," said Ebell of the national records. "We're a championship team, and we proved it tonight."

Next week, the Cougars will have a chance to make those words come true when they take on the Arroyo Grande Eagles in the title game at a time and place to be announced. The Cougars defeated the Eagles 41-28 on the last Friday of September. "It's going to be hard nose," said Ebell, "they hit real hard". No doubt that's true Tyler - if they can catch you.
