| Santa Barbara WebSmith Staff November 24, 2000 Tyler Ebell set a new single season rushing record to lead the Ventura Cougars to a 38-21 win over Royal. Ebell rushed for 354 yards on 43 carries to bring his season total to 3,899 - surpassing the old record of 3,585. The Highlanders struck first on a 60 yard interception return in the first quarter. But the Cougars answered back on a one yard touchdown run by Ebell with 2:00 left in the first quarter. Royal outscored Ventura in the second quarter to take a 14-10 half-time lead into the locker room. The Cougars points came on a 25 yard field goal by Anderson, Ventura's first field goal of the year. The third quarter belonged to the Cougars as Ebell scored his second touchdown on a 30 yard run. Then Andrew Lovier connect on a 20 yard pass to Sean McNairy to put the Cougars up 24-14. The Highlands should their intent to come back when a 32 yard touchdown pass with 10:21 remaining in the fourth quarter. But Ebell had two more touchdowns runs, of 70 and 8 yards to cap the victory. Ventura will next take on Lompoc in a semi-final game on Friday, December 1 at a site to be determined. In other Channel League CIF action, Dos Pueblos lost to Agoura 14-10 in the battle of the Chargers. Shane Lopes passed for 229 yards on 12 completions. David McKenzie ran 31 yards on seven carries and scored Dos Pueblo's only touchdown. Omar Montepeque kicked a 22 yard field goal to account for the rest of the Chargers scoring. Dos Pueblos finishes with a 7-5 record. Meanwhile, Buena was lock in a battle at host Arroyo Grande and eventually fell to the Eagles. 27-31. Andrew Paulson completed 17 of 21 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns while Freddie Keiaho carried the ball 20 times for 184 yards and the Bulldogs other two touchdowns. Keiaho ended the season with 2,102 rushing yards for the Bulldogs. The Channel League Champions end their year at 9-3. |
