It Couldn't Have Been Closer

Channel League dominance of CIF-SS Division IV Water Polo was on display tonight as the Santa Barbara Dons clashed with the Ventura Cougars at UCSB in the Championship Game. The two teams had met twice before and each had won once by a single point.

Bryan Snyder and Ryan Caswell opened the scoring for the Dons in the first quarter, with Adam Payan adding one for the Cougars. In the second quarter the teams traded a point a piece for a half time score of 3-2 in favor of the Dons.

After halftime, both teams broke loose, scoring three points a piece and in a two minute forty-six second time frame. In the fourth quarter, Ventura pulled even at six and then scored with 1:54 left on a goal by Teague Savitch to take a one point lead. With just 23 seconds left in the game, the Dons' Nolan Flavell lobbed the ball into the goal to tie the game at seven. "I was thinking we've got to play great defense for 20 seconds so we can get to over time," said Dons' Coach Mark Walsh. Parker Borneman had a different idea. After stealing a Cougar pass he drove to the goal and put the ball in the net with just six seconds remaining in the game, giving the Dons a 8-7 lead. The Cougars had one more shot at tying the game, but couldn't manage a score.

"We had an incredible year," said Coach Joe Abing of the 19-5 Cougars. "We weren't suppose to get this far." Few expected them to beat Royal in the semi-finals yet they scored an impressive 11-5 win to gain a berth in the finals. "I am very proud of these guys," said Abing. Goalie David Miller had a phenomenal night with seven saves, including blocking on penalty shot early in the fourth quarter.

Walsh credited the Cougars with a tremendous game. "This game should have gone to overtime, but we got lucky. I define "luck" as when chance and preparation meet." Walsh has now won five CIF titles, three with the girls team and two with the guys. "We easily could have put our heads down and given up, but these guys have a ton of heart."

Congratulations to both teams for tremendously successful seasons.
