A very successful season for the Santa Barbara Dons Girl's Volleyball came to an end this evening. After having captured their first CIF-SS Championship on Saturday with a 3-2 win over South Torrance, the Don's fell to St. Joseph of Lakewood 3-1 in the first round of the CIF State Division II Tournament.

Coach Nan Verkiak credited her team with a well played and hard fought game. "Inside their hearts is now a big place which they can call on when they find themselves in tough situations in their lives." said Verkiak. "These are good people, any one of which I would like to have as a next door neighbor. This game should help to make them tougher, kinder and better. If that's what they get out of this, the coaches have done a great job."

The Dons stepped off on a face pace, winning the first game easily 15-3. Their momentum continued in Game 2 as the gained a 8-1 advantage. But the Jesters of St. Joseph began gaining speed, pulling to within three and forcing Santa Barbara to take a time out at 8-5. When play resumed, the Dons pulled ahead 10-5. But when they glanced back over their shoulder, the Jesters had pulled to within 1. St. Joseph called a time out at 11-9 and then scored the next six points to win the game 15-11 pulling even in the match at a game a piece.

Game three turned out to be the marathon race. At six all Jennifer Daniels stepped up to serve for St. Joseph and didn't stop until she had run the score to 11-6. After trading three points each, the Jesters served at 14-9 for the game, but Kristen Keefer dumped the ball over the net for a kill. Jessica Harlin contributed two kills of a three point Dons' drive, forcing St. Joseph to take a time out. The Dons added another point before losing the serve, giving the Jester's a second opportunity to serve for game point at 14-13. The Jester's would also have a third opportunity before Christina Louie would smash the ball over the net to tie the game at 14. After pulling ahead 15-14, the Dons had three chances of their own to serve for game point but St. Joseph earned a sideout on each serve and then pulled even at 15. After trading sideouts twice, Caitlyn Wilson pounded the ball for a kill bringing the Don's to within one. The Jester's dashed ahead, however, winning not only the sideout, but also the next three points and taking a 2-1 lead.

In game four, St. Joseph jumped out to a 6-1 lead before Louie picked up a sideout with a kill. Louie then went on a 5 point service streak, tying the game at 6. The game also tied at 7 and at 8 before St. Joseph went on a 6 point streak of their own. After a match point service error, Santa Barbara scored twice to make the score 14-10. A series of sideouts saw St. Joseph serve match point unsuccessfully another five times before finally scoring the final point and taking the game 15-10.

Wilson led the Dons with 13 kills, Louie added 11 while Harlin contributed 10. Keefer led the Don's defense with 16 digs, offensively she set for 44 assists. Harlin and Shannon Brooker also had double digit digs with 14 and 11 respectively. Brooker also contributed at the net with 4 stuff blocks.

Congratulations to the Santa Barbara Dons on a great season.
