| Larry Emrich, Principal, Ventura High School October 27, 2000 Ventura High School and the Ventura Unified School District officially dedicated the football field at Larrabee Stadium in a ceremony during halftime at the football game with Dos Pueblos, October 27th. The field has been named Turner Field in honor of Eric Turner, a 1986 Ventura High School graduate and an outstanding athlete. In his senior year of football, he was captain and MVP of the Cougars and all-league (three consecutive years), all county, all-CIF, all-state and All-America. He earned All-America honors from Adidas-Scholastic Coach and was a member of Sporting News Top 100 and the National High Scouting service Top 100. He also garnered all-state honors and was the Channel League and Ventura County Defensive Player of the Year. The County Star named him Ventura County Athlete of the Year. Eric helped Ventura to the 1984 CIF-Southern Section Coastal Conference finals in 1984. Eric went on to UCLA where he was named All-America and to the Associated Press All-America team. He had 13 career interceptions at UCLA and was chosen as the No. 2 overall selection in the NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns. It was the earliest a defensive back had been picked since 1956. In 1997 he signed a four-year contract with the Raiders. He passed away in May of this year. |
