Bulldogs look to even the score with Cougars

Santa Barbara WebSmith Staff
October 19, 2000

Exactly four weeks had passed since Ventura's Girl's Volleyball team marched into the Buena Gym and marched out with a 3-1 win. Tonight, the Lady Bulldogs had revenge on their minds.

In the end, Buena used strong defense and tremendous serving to repay the Cougars by handing them a 3-0 loss in their gym. In the first game, Ventura struck first taking a two point lead, but then the Bulldogs took control, and won the first game 15-8.

In game two, Buena continued their domination behind a strong serving performance by Janee Richards, winning 15-5. With game three, however, came a shift in momentum that saw Ventura take an 11-4 lead, suggesting volleyball fans were in for a long night. But the Bulldogs were ready to go home. They battled back to within one point at 13-12. Ventura added another, but could not reach 15 before Buena tied the score at 14 and then pushed on for two more for a 16-14 win.

Coach Jack Richards (Buena) noted the strong serving of Janee Richards and Kele Prentice and the hitting of Lindsey Martin, Lisa Worley, Keri Kiech, and Jamie Vine. He also pointed to the great defense and passing of Prentice, Traci Zier, Kim Coleman, and Kami Teal as essential to their victory. Richards contributed 25 assists to the effort. With the win, Buena moves to 3-2 in the Channel League and 6-5 overall while Ventura falls to 2-3 and 6-4 overall. Both teams' next opponent is San Marcos. The Cougars will travel to San Marcos on Tuesday and the Bulldogs will host the Royals on Thursday.
