| Royals and Dons Meet in Volleyball Rematch |
|---|
| Rick Walrath October 19, 2000 For San Marcos, it was a crucial girls' volleyball match Thursday night in their efforts to capture another Channel League title. For the crosstown rival Santa Barbara Dons, it was an opportunity to put themselves in the driver's seat of the league race. The two teams punched and counter-punched for five games at the San Marcos Thunderhut, with the Royals posting a huge win in the end. The scores were 11-15, 15-12, 15-1, 13-15, 15-10. San Marcos opened strong, racing out to a quick 7-1 lead on the serving of Mandy Bible and the hitting of Lauren Bishop. But then Santa Barbara's Jessica Harlin got hot, leading the Dons back to an 11-11 tie. That's when the Dons' Christina Louie and Caitlyn Wilson came up big from the service line, both serving aces. Kills by Louie and Harlin finished off the Royals in game one. The Royals' blocking and defense highlighted game two. In a see-saw struggle, Lindsay Jordan and Chelsea Popp came up with key stuffs late in the game, Popp's giving the Royals the victory. Bible once again excelled from the service line in game three, serving for the first seven points of the game. After the Dons finally got on the board, Jordan served back-to-back aces during another 6-0 run to finish the game. It appeared that the Royals would put the match away in game four, jumping out to leads of 9-1 and 13-6. But then the Dons stunned San Marcos with a 10-0 run, highlighted by several of Harlin's team-high 21 kills, to pull out the win. Said San Marcos Coach Jon Lee about Santa Barbara's comeback, "They came back from death's door and put a serious shiver in our spines". Undaunted though, the Royals, led by another big game from Bishop, who led both teams with 23 kills on the night, withstood Santa Barbara's rally from an early 6-2 deficit to win the match. A key moment in the game came when, at 7-6 San Marcos, a Santa Barbara serve appeared long, but each official saw it differently. After a discussion, it was ruled out. The Royals then scored the next six points. The Dons fought back again, but San Marcos ended the match dramatically with a Bible ace. Santa Barbara Coach Nan Verkaik summed up things by saying, "It was nice to come back(in the fourth game). Both teams played well. We just didn't do the things we needed to do". San Marcos, now 3-2 in league and 9-3 overall, continues its busy week with a non-league match against visiting Huntington Beach Friday night at 7:00. Santa Barbara, 4-1 in league and 7-5 overall, hosts Dos Pueblos Tuesday night at 7:00.
