| Santa Barbara WebSmith Staff October 15, 2000 Cross town rivalries was the theme for the first week of league play by Channel League Football teams. The "Big Game" in Ventura County saw the Buena Bulldogs playing host to the favored Ventura Cougars. The Cougars drew first blood on a touchdown run by Tyler Ebell, but the Bulldogs battled back scoring two touchdowns in the second quarter and taking a 14-7 lead into the locker room at halftime. Each team scored another touchdown in the third quarter however, Ventura missed the extra point attempt. After posting another touchdown in the fourth quarter, Tyler Ebell made up for the missed kick with a two point converstion. However, the Bulldogs matched the Cougars fourth quarter TD with one of their own and upset Ventura 28-21. Andrew Paulson completed 10 of 19 passes for 137 yards to lead the Bulldogs air attack while Freddie Keiaho powered the ground attack with 199 yards on 27 carries. Tyler Ebell was held to under 300 yards for the first time this season, but nonetheless carried the ball 34 times for 240 yards, bring his six game total to an astonishing 2,025 yards. The Cougars are now 5-1 overall and 0-1 in league play. The Bulldogs brought their record up to 4-2 and 1-0 while taking a strong position to challenge for their fourth straight Channel League Football title. Meanwhile, another "Big Game" was taking place in Santa Barbara County as the Santa Barbara Dons hosted the San Marcos Royals. Smarting from last years lost to the Dons on the last play of the game, San Marcos had revenge on their minds. Preston Maloney stepped into the starting quarterback role for the Dons and threw for 120 yards (9 for 14), but it was San Marcos who held a 14-10 lead at half time. Spencer Schomer and Andrew Vines lead the Royals on the ground with 154 and 100 yards respectively. After a scoreless third quarter, the Royals added another touchdown to their lead, but Santa Barbara was not finished. The Dons placed the football in the endzone two more times to win the grudge match 24-21. The Dons improved their record to 2-4 while posting a 1-0 league record. The Royals fell to 1-5 and 0-1. Dos Pueblos drew a Channel League bye and hosted Rio Mesa in a non-league contest. The first half scoring was limited to a Dos Pueblos field goal, but the Charger's ignited in the third quarter for three touchdowns as DP posted a 24-0 win over the Spartans. Shane Lopes completed 6 of 16 passes for 120 yards, four of which were to Jay Staggs for 109 receiving yards. David MacKenzie carried the ball for 104 yards on 9 carries to lead the Chargers on the ground. The Chargers open league play on Friday by hosting Santa Barbara at Valley Stadium. Buena draws the bye and will travel to Oxnard. Ventura will host San Marcos in the Cougars' homecoming game at Larrabee Stadium. All games begin at 7:30 pm. |
